Armin was born someone physically weak, smaller than most males his age. This caused him to be the target of bullies. However he was fortunate enough to make friends with Eren and Mikasa. Although still falling victim to bullying, he could always count on them to come to his side when he needed them. Inwardly this bothered him and caused him to have lack of self respect. He realized his friends saw him as something that was weak and needed protecting. Through time his self image grew more tainted, and he became emotionally as weak as he was physically. With his parents and grandfather gone, he needed his friends more than ever. Through training in becoming a soldier he slowly grew out of this mindset, finding strength in his friends. His confidence grew and he learned how to trust himself, and accept that he was strong, just not in the same areas as his friends. He has a strong mind. These days he uses his persistence and determination to motivate others, knowing well how it feels to not have any hope. Having this new found inner strength, it is something he is never going to let go of. He will not let himself be weak again, he believes in what he is capable of.  Which is being a loyal friend, aiding the physically strong with brilliant strategies, and keeping the overall moral up.
