Under The Sea
Daughter to King Triton, Ariel was always adventurous and seeking to explore the world above the surface. She finally that chance after saving the step-daughter of the
Evil Queen, Snow White. While the two
became fast friends, Snow was quick to convince the mermaid to attend the ball of the man that
Ariel had found an immediate draw to and
had become smitten with him.

The mermaid had the chance to walk on
land due to once a year the Great Sea
Witch, Ursula would lend mermaids the
ability to rid their fins for legs. The night had not
went as the two of the had planned, and though Ariel
had the choice to forever remain a
human for the love of her life,
her friendship with Snow White was
more pertinent.
 
It was for this exact reason that Ariel
lost her voice for nearly three decades
until Regina had deemed to call her to
Neverland in exchange for retrieving an item from Rumplestiltskin's shop. She was promised
the gift of her voice and a
reunion with Eric along
with a bracelet that transformed
her into a human.

Part of That World
Once in Storybrooke, Ariel encountered Belle the Beauty, and the love of Rumplestiltskin's life.
With her help and after an afternoon of danger,
the two found the item she needed to deliver
to the Queen and the Dark One.
Once returning it to them, Regina cast a spell on the adornment of her wrist to endow Ariel with control over whether to have her tail or legs. 

Once the curse was undone from Storybrooke,
Eric turns up missing and
separated from Ariel. Searching relentlessly for him
she finds the ship, The Jolly Roger, and the
Captain's sword and discovers Eric
has been kidnapped by pirates.
In a panic, she accuses Hook of being the
one to abduct Eric, however, after
noticing Black Beard's intial's on the blade Hook
 assures Ariel he was not
the one to take Eric. Helping her to track down
the pirates, it ended in fury and frustration for Ariel to find out that Hook,
whom she had heard tales of him being a hero,
would rather save his own ship

than to help her find her one true love.
After tossing heated words his was, Ariel disappeared into the ocean to continue her search alone,
whereupon she swims to Hangman's Island
to find Eric and the two decided to reside there.
So why has the mermaid returned to Storybrooke?
