Unlike most of those in his group of friends, Kaoru does not come from a family of wealth and privilege - but one wouldn't know it from his personality. He lives in his family's dojo with his grandfather: Tachibana Genburo, his parents have never been visible figures and Kaoru does not speak about that for people to know so there have been plenty of rumors over the years: from his having been abandoned at birth, his mother running away in shame and his father some foreigner, to Kaoru having murdered them. He has a habit of laughing all of these off and just never tells anyone the truth of it.
He is a master of the arts taught by his grandfather and helps run the courses at the dojo along with other duties such as cleaning, cooking, and taking care of the gardens. His grandmother's death a few years ago rather put a lot of extra work on him but someone has to take care of Genburo and the dojo, after all. It is unclear whether or not he intends to keep the traditions and the dojo after his grandfather's passing but so far that has not been anything to worry about.
People say Kaoru's a crazy one, either they feel he lacks emotion and empathy or they believe he's too illogical and hot tempered. Except, when asked, most cannot remember ever seeing him lose his temper, even in a physical fight; perhaps that is the reason they feel he's unpredictable and possibly unhinged. The truth of it is, he does have a very nasty temper but like his grandfather, he also knows blindly letting his rage lead him will get his little ass killed. He's also very playful, cheerful, and worries greatly over his friends and those he considers family. He enjoys gardening and candies of all sorts - he sometimes experiments with new flavors and forces his friends to try them with him.
